Module 8: Applying Chemical Ideas
Organic Reactions Workshop
In this experiment students will investigate some of the reactions of alcohols. Students will perform oxidation reactions and observe demonstration of esterification reaction. Then, the products of the reactions will be analysed using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) instrument to determine the effectiveness of the reactions.
Assumed knowledge for this workshop is Module 7 Organic Chemistry.
Module 7: Organic Chemistry
Alcohols
- Investigate the structural formulae, properties and function groups including:
-primary;
-secondary;
-tertiary alcohols;
- Write equations, state conditions and predict products to represent the reactions of alcohols, including but not limited to (ACSCH128, ACSCH136):
-combustion,
-dehydration,
-substitution with HX,
-oxidation.
- Investigate the products of oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols
Module 8: Applying Chemical Ideas
Analysis of organic compounds
- Investigate the process used to analyse the structure of simple organic compounds address in the course, including but not limited to:
-proton and carbon-13 NMR;
-mass spectrometry (ACSCH19);
Determining concentration with UV-Vis spectroscopy Workshop
In this experiment, students will use UV-Visible spectroscopy to determine concentration of ions in solutions. A solution of potassium permanganate will be used to gather absorbance data, which will be used to obtain Beer’s Law curve. The curve will then be used to calculate concentration of an unknown solution of potassium permanganate.
Assumed knowledge for this workshop is Module 8- Applying Chemical Ideas
Module 8: Applying Chemical Ideas
Analysis of inorganic compounds
- Conduct investigations and/or process data to determine concentration of coloured species and/or metal ions in aqueous solutions, including but not limited to:
-ultraviolet visible spectrophotometry;
